Tees Nature and The Climate Emergency – Panel Questions

We are still collecting some of the responses to these questions which will be updated soon

  • Are there any plans to take land from the Tees Valley into carbon sequestration?
  • Is there scope for existing nature reserves to be improved in any way for carbon capture & nature recovery
  • Given there is a perception that floods are increasing and causing increasing damages: could you give us an update on the latest flood management measure being implemented on Teesside, NE, National
  • How do you expect BREXIT affect the job market in (y)our field for graduates? Is there any sectors where there will be more opportunities for university graduates?
  • How do you expect the COVID19 crisis affect the job market in (y)our field for graduates? Is there any sectors where there will be more opportunities for university graduates?
  • How will climate change modify carers and career paths change, and what to expect in the future for people entering the workforce in the environmental sector?
  • I feel disgusted and disillusioned that our society does find the means to tackle the climate and environmental crisis we are in, while resources are found to deal with COVID19 what can I do about it?
  • Is there any evidence you are aware of that suggest we can achieve Net Zero Carbon targets in the North East of England?
  • Is your company/organisation currently hiring graduates and how does this compare with the field as a whole? If there are opportunities do you mind if I get in touch?
  • What do you think are the implications of leaving the EU for research and wildlife conservation in marine ecosystems? (Considering fishing, international agreement on marine conservation, etc.)
  • What local place would be most suitable for rewilding and when do you think it is going to happen?
  • Are there any plans for saltmarsh restoration or other habitat creation in the vast brownfield areas on the south bank of the Tees?
  • What’s the best role for local volunteer activists?
  • I go into schools and talk about plastics and their effect on the environment. I do regular litter picks. Can we all collaborate and set up an anti-litter campaign, please?
  • National Forest Inventory stats 6% Stockton upon Tees / Middlesbrough 5% – opportunity to create more sustainably designed woodland with resilience in mind in the Tees Valley. Need to encourage the UK
  • Increase in population, houses, solar farms, peatlands, farmers to reduce livestock but recognising topography/climate dictates food production, can we produce sufficient foods food from 2050
  • ‘re LNRS – how and when will boundaries of ‘county sized’ LNRS areas be confirmed? Will that be done ‘top-down or based on local ‘bids’?
  • I will assume that there will be funding the costs to cover Local Nature Recovery Strategies and the resultant activities needed and where will this come from?
  • How will net gain be policed & enforced? I don’t trust anyone to actually deliver what they say they will.
  • Is 30 years really long enough commitment “re BNG? It’s less than a working career…!”
  • Many habitats will only just be starting to get interesting and ecologically ‘valuable’ after 30 years – is this really a long-term gain or is it hoped that once established sites will stay?
  • How concerned do we need to be about the potential impact of proposed changes to the Planning system? Is there a disconnect between build, build rhetoric and much of what discussed today?
  • Has anyone compared ‘Industrial’ carbon capture and storage, to natural storage in Peatlands?
  • Offering 30yr management of “environmental improvement” post-development.   Stripping off and storing topsoil kills it – takes longer than 30 yrs to get it back.  Even hs2 is going for 50 yrs.    As more development on pasture /farmland should be min req for all  Re ecology and climate.
  • I was most interested in were around the future green economy. Do you get any sense that businesses or funding bodies, now or in the future – Habitat Banks, etc., – want to invest in the facilities and infrastructure of organisations like the Trust – to do more and make us more able to take on the challenges of a changing climate and global loss of habitat on their behalf – or only indirect habitat interventions on a project by project basis? A 30-year commitment sounds great, but some portion of that funding really needs to address the development of core capabilities – do more, be more efficient, do it for less, rinse and repeat!
